What We Do for the Guardian Program:
The Peak Performance Institute is honored to collaborate with Texas Independent School Districts in the development and implementation of their Guardian Programs. Under the leadership of Dr. Jan Ford Mustin, a distinguished expert with more than 35 years of experience in conducting armed officer evaluations, the Institute provides comprehensive psychological assessment services, including Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) testing and security officer evaluations. These specialized services are designed to ensure that Level 3 Commissioned Security Officers, Level 4 Personal Protection
Officers, School Guardians, and School Marshals demonstrate not only the necessary physical competencies but also the psychological stability and suitability required to meet the critical responsibilities of their positions.
Why it Matters
The Crucial Role of Psychological Evaluation in School Guardian Programs
The decision to authorize school personnel to carry firearms is one of great responsibility and significance. Individuals entrusted with this role must possess more than technical proficiency; they must demonstrate emotional stability, sound judgment, and the capacity to perform effectively under extreme pressure. A comprehensive psychological evaluation is therefore an essential component in determining readiness and suitability for these duties.
At The Peak Performance Institute, our evaluations extend far beyond a standard interview. Utilizing validated, evidence-based psychological assessments, we provide a thorough and objective analysis of each candidate’s personality structure, emotional functioning, and mental health. Core areas of evaluation include:
- Stress Tolerance and Emotional Regulation: Assessing the ability to maintain composure and clear judgment in high-stress or life-threatening circumstances.
- Impulse Control and Decision-Making: Evaluating tendencies toward impulsivity or risk-taking behaviors that could compromise safety.
- Social Competence and Communication: Measuring interpersonal effectiveness, professionalism, and conflict de-escalation skills essential for working within school environments.
- Absence of Disqualifying Psychological Conditions: Screening for clinical disorders—such as severe anxiety, depression, or paranoia—that may impair an individual’s capacity to fulfill their responsibilities safely and effectively.
MMPI Testing and MCMI Testing: The Gold Standard for High-Stakes Evaluation
As a central component of our assessment process, The Peak Performance Institute employs the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory – 3 (MMPI-3) as well as the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory – IV (MCMI-IV)—both globally recognized and empirically validated psychological instruments. The MMPI is not a traditional pass/fail measure; rather, it provides a nuanced understanding of personality traits, behavioral tendencies, and potential psychological vulnerabilities.
For Texas Guardian Programs, the MMPI-3 and MCMI-IV offer critical advantages:
- Detection of Response Bias: The MMPI’s validity scales identify attempts to manipulate responses or present an unrealistically positive self-image, ensuring an accurate and credible assessment.
- Standardized and Objective Insights: Unlike subjective interviews, MMPI results provide reliable data benchmarks aligned with norms from law enforcement and other high-risk professions.
- Early Identification of Hidden Risks: The assessment can reveal underlying psychological concerns that may not emerge through background checks or traditional interviews, offering districts an additional layer of confidence and protection.
